John was the miller for CC McMickle and bought land from him in 1885, so he may have rented before that. 1885, 14 January ~~ John B. bought thirty five ( 35 ) acres adjoining Bartholomew from CC McMickle and wife R.P. for the sum of $100. "land adjoining B. Smith, John H. Johnson and others. beginning at B. Smith corner ~ east old Franklin Line." 19 Dec 1893 ~ Bartholomew Smith makes deed to John Burcham on condition that John and family would "move into his house, take care of him during his natural life and give him a decent burial"(Same day as Bartholomew's death. ~ 1900, March 5 ~ Tax receipt from Franklin Township to JB SMITH for $ 3.84. John Burcham Smith died from a childhood disease said caught from one of the children. He was only a month away from his 55th birthday, and he left seven children and a widow of 53, who would out-live him some 38 years. He left NO will, probably thinking he was too young to make one, but Lucinda and her children received the lands of Bartholomew that John didn't live long enough to enjoy.
