Stricken with fatal illness on the afternoon of 6th July Mr. J. B. Steele succumbed shortly after 9 o'clock Thursday July 7th, surrounded by his devoted wife, to whom he was married only a few short months ago, and a number of sorrowing friends. At about 1 o'clock Thursday morning Mr. Steele lapsed into a semi-conscious condition, from which he never revived. Death was due to angina pectoris. For some time he had been troubled with his heart, and only last week made a trip by automobile to Florence to consult Dr. McLeod. All the physicians in the city were called to his beside and everything possible was done to prolong his life but to no avail. It is believed that shock incidental to the sudden death of his friend Mr. John R. Smith, a few days ago which affected aim profoundly, hastened the work of the fatal malady which he was suffering. John Burgess Steele was born in Georgetown March 27th 1851, the son of John and Ann Elizabeth (Davies) Steele. His father was in charge of several of the largest rice plantations in this county. Securing what limited education was obtainable after the Civil War and Reconstruction period, he went to work in a grocery store at the age of 15, and since then for the space of 55 years he has been in business in Georgetown. Early in his career, Mr. Steele, displayed those sterling qualities that have carried him forward and upward until he became a leader in business and the responsible head of some of Georgetown's greatest financial and commercial institutions. In 1880 he helped to organize the Steele Moses Company of which he was one of the most active members for nine year. When the Georgetown Grocery Company was organized and of which he was selected president continuing in that capacity until his death. In 1903 upon the creation of the Peoples Bank, he was elected president, and in all these institutions his safe guiding hand and the confidence and support of the public which never failing to come to his assistance in whatever he undertook, brought about a success a that has been a moving factor in the development of his community and surrounding area. During the time of volunteerism enthusiastic and able fireman, and at one time was assistant fire chief. He served one term as Alderman during the administration of Mayor W. D. Morgan and was one of the Commissioners of Public Works when the extensive municipal system of water and sewerage was installed. The great task called for hard work and able supervision and Mr. Steele gave generously of his time and (illegible). He was a director in about all the building and town associations ever operated in this city and his wise counsels were sought and appreciated in practically in every undertaking. Few men who have ever lived here enjoyed to an equal degree the respect and confidence of the public. His rugged honesty and probability of character appealed strongly to all with whom he came in contact. He was a loyal attendant upon Duncan Memorial Methodist Church for many years a member of the board of trustees and a generous contributor towards its support. He rarely missed a service and then only for a good cause. Mr. Steele has taken a leading part in the agricultural development of the outlying land adjacent to Georgetown believing this to be a necessary accomplishment looking toward the best permanent growth and prosperity of this section of country. He had the most abiding faith in the possibilities of this county agriculturally and did not hesitate to expend his means for that development. Mr. Steele married Miss Sophie Elizabeth Christie out of this county, who died in 1918. In the later years Mrs. Steele became an invalid and Mr. Steele then displayed the tender qualities of heart that showed his true inner nature. Nothing was to much expense of trouble to gratify her every wish, and nothing was left undone to help her condition and his attitude was indeed beautiful to contemplate to the very end. Having built the handsome and nice Peoples Bank and its home, and which was long been an ornament to the city Mr. Steele conceived the notion to erect a handsome home for himself. This beautiful home on the corner of Broad and Prince Streets has only recently been completed. A few months ago he married to Miss Minnie Daggett, of this city and since the completion of the new home. It has been occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Steele whose main thoughts were to make it an attractive, comfortable place of rest for the former in his advancing years. But the time allotted was all too short. The funeral services were held this afternoon at 6'oclock at the Duncan Memorial Methodist Church, conducted by fire department the Rev. R. H. Jones assisted by the Rev. W. S. Porter. The active pallbearers were: L. H. Siau, G. B. Sanders, E. E. Orvin, E. L. Bost, H. H. Craven, W. C. Rogers, A. F. Poston and F. Ashford.
