John Byers, son of William and Elizabeth Byers, was born in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, September 12, 1845, and died in Pawnee City, Nebraska, February 25, 1920, aged 74 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was raised on a farm. At the age of 18 he joined the army (in February, 1864) under Captain James C. Patton, of Co. D, 21st regiment of Pennsylvania cavalry volunteers, to serve three years or till the end of the war. He was honorably discharged July 8, 1865, at Lynchburg, Va. After being discharged he taught school a year in Franklin county, Pa. He then went to Delavan, Ill., and attended school at Bloomington, Ill. In the fall of 1868 he came to Nebraska with his uncle, J. C. Wertz. In 1870 he took a homestead in Nemaha county, Kansas. Here he taught school four years, walking four miles night and morning. His home was on this homestead until about five years ago, when he moved to Pawnee City, where he has since resided. He was united in marriage with Mary E. Richardson, November 9, 1971. Unto them were born seven children, all of whom survive to sympathize with their mother in the loss of a faithful and affectionate father and husband. The children are Mrs. Lizzie Edgerton, Mrs. Clara Dauthet, William J., John W., Mrs. Nellie Shuck, Mrs. Lottie Price, and C. Hiram. Brother Byers united with the church in early boyhood. His first church home was with the Methodist, but at the time of his marriage he joined the United Brethren church, south of Pawnee City, as one of the charter members. He was a devout believer and faithful christian to the end. He leaves eleven grandchildren to mourn their loss of a devoted grandfather. Besides the member of his own family he leaves five brothers and three sisters, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon by Rev. C. N. Dawson, of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. Hedges, of the U. B. church.
