Description	:	The 1860 census enumerates him as an Overseer in the San Marino District of Dinwiddie county. In 1861 he enlisted with Company I of the 12th Regiment of Virginia Volunteer Infantry as a private. He obtained a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability and was discharged. The certificate, dated 14 October 1861, described him as being five feet six inches tall, with a dark complexion, dark hair and black eyes.
