Gregg. Our notice of the death of J.C. Gregg last week was necessarily very brief, as it occurred just as we were going to press, and we were unable to give a sketch of his life. He was born in November, 1822, in Surrey county, N.C., and when 4 or 5 years old, moved with his parents to Centerville, Wayne county, Ind. He was a school-mate of the late Ex-Gov. Oliver P. Morton, of whom he was a great admirer. He was married in Centerville, to Miss Caroline M. Black, sister of our townsman, J.S. Black, in 1850. After their marriage they resided a year or two at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where Mr. Gregg had a severe attack of typhoid fever. He removed to Hillsboro on account of his health in '59, and several years was engaged in bridge-building and built many of the bridges over the streams and adjoining counties. He was a fine mechanic and architect, and superintended the building of the Indianapolis depot, then the largest railroad depot in the country. His first wife died in this city in 1875, and in 1877, he was married the second time to Miss Maggie L. Richards, who survives him. When the Citizens' National Bank was organized, Mr. Gregg was elected President, which position he held at the time of his death. He was possessed of excellent business qualifications, and much of the success of the Bank is due to his energy and good management. As a leading and active Republican, Mr. Gregg will be greatly missed by his party. During the war he took and ardent and active part in maintaining the cause of the Union, and ever since has been an unswerving and faithful Republican, and generally a member of the Central Committee, and was indefatigable in his labors for the success of the party. As a party manager, he had few equals in shrewdness and sagacity, and displayed the same untiring energy which he brought into his private business, and which made him so successful in all his undertakings. He leaves only one child, Mr. Wm. H. Gregg, of the firm of Amen, Gregg & Co. The funeral services were held last Thursday morning at the M.E. church, of which church Mr. Gregg had been a consistent member for 40 years. They were conducted by the Masonic Order, of which he was a prominent memter, and the sermon was preached by Rev. Kendall. The funeral cortege was a large one, the Knights Templar and Masons turning out in their regalia and uniforms, and marching to the Cemetery.
