Description	:	John C Lary, son of John and Amanda Gochanour Lary, was born in Noble Township, Cass County, near Griswold on December 23, 1878 one of eleven children. He attended Wax School and lived in Noble Township until his marriage to Mary Ellen Mattheis, daughter of John T. and Ellen Weber Mattheis, on February 21, 1906. Mary Ellen Mattheis was born in Union Township on March 15, 1881. She attended Victor School in Union Township, Cumberland High School, and the State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. He attended Wax School and lived in Noble Township until his marriage to Mary Ellen Mattheis, daughter of John T. and Ellen Weber Mattheis, on February 21, 1906. Mary Ellen Mattheis was born in Union Township on March 15, 1881. She attended Victor School in Union Township, Cumberland High School, and the State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school for eight years, both in rural and in the Cumberland schools. Following their marriage, Mary and John moved to a farm northwest of Massena and lived there the rest of their lives. John was a member of the Evangelical Church near Grant, until he moved to the Pine Grove vicinity, when he became a member of the Pine Grove Methodist Church. He was affiliated with the Centennial Masoinic Lodge of Grant and later transferred tho the Comfort Masonic Lodge #515 of Massena, receiving his 50-year, life membership in 1954. He passed away February 14, 1958. Mary Ellen Lary was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Cumberland and a member of the Pine Grove Methodist Church. She passed away on May 2, 1961. John and Mary had four children: Orris Edwin, born December 11, 1909, died October 22, 1976; Leona Myrtle, born October 1, 1912, died April 8, 1978; Amanda Esther, born June 9, 1914, died April 28, 1982; and Ellen Lucille, born June 7, 1916.
