Later censuses indicate he was born about 1865 and his descendants say he was born closer to 1865. His father John Scott died in the Civil War. We don't know the exact date. John Calvin was the last child of 4 born to John Scott and Virginia Wait in Pontotoc, MS. John Calvin and his family moved from MS to Yell, AR about 1905 and they are in the 1910 census in Rover, Yell, AR. They came to AR with John's sister and her family: Anderson Jeptha "Jep" Parham and Sarah R. Judith Scott, who are also in the 1910 census in Yell, AR but later moved to Paris, Logan, AR by 1914. John Calvin and his family lived and worked mainly in Ola, Wing, Forester, and Briggsville areas in Yell County but he and his wife Margaret are found in 1930 living with their son Jesse J. in South Fork, Montgomery County, AR. In 1940 John C. Scott and wife Margaret are still living with their son Jesse and his family but now in Forester, Scott, AR. Their son Glen also lived in Montgomery in 1930 and in Forester, Scott, AR in 1940. John Calvin Scott died about 1942 but I cannot find a death record for him, so I wonder if the date and place of his death is correct on his grave marker. I think it was added at a date quite some time after his death. If anyone can find his death record I would very much like to have it in order to confirm the names of his parents.
