Mr. Campbell had spent the sixty-seven years of his life in and near Salem. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Besides the sorrowing wife the deceased is survived by the following children: Mrs. Rachel McMillan, Miss Myrtle Campbell and Alvie Campbell. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Birth Date: abt 1837 Sources: Roster & Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of Rebellion. ------------ After their muster into the service of the United States, at Iowa City, in the early part of October, 1861, Companies A, B and C, of the Fourteenth Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry,were ordered to proceed to Fort Randall, Dakota Territory, and, upon their arrival at that post, to relieve the garrison—composed of troops of the Regular Army—then on duty at the Fort. The three companies left their camp near Iowa City on November 2, 1861, and marched, by way of Des Moines, Council Bluffs and Sioux City, Iowa, to Fort Randall arriving at the latter place December 6,1861, having marched five hundred fifty miles in thirty-five days. Some portions of the command were more or less constantly engaged in co-operating with the cavalry in the work of scouting and keeping watch upon the movements of roving bands of hostile Indians, and thus protecting—in so far as it was possible—the homes of the settlers. On September 18, 1862, the three companies were transferred from the Fourteenth Iowa Infantry, and received the official designation of the Forty-first Iowa Infantry Battalion. The Battalion remained at Fort Randall and continued in the discharge of the duties heretofore described until April, 1863, when the order—.heretofore quoted—was issued, transferring the Battalion to the Seventh Iowa Cavalry. As part of 7th Iowa Cavalry participated in guarding lines of telegraph and travel, escorting trains & protecting emigrants, having frequent combats with Indians in the Departments of Missouri,Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Dakotas.
