He was born in Grant county, Wis., about forty-four years ago. In 1882 he came west with his brothers and settled in Lincoln township. On April 9, 1888, he was united in marriage to Catherine Britt, daughter of the late Thomas Britt of Stanton township. Six children were born to them, three sons and three daughters. The first born, a son died in infancy and of the five living the oldest is a boy 12 years of age and the youngest a girl of 2 years whom with the beloved mother mourn his death. He is also survived by his aged and widowed mother who lives with her son, Ed, in Lincoln township, Jas. Carl and Annie Carel of Lincoln township, Will of LeMars and a married sister living in Minnesota. John Carel was a man who was greatly esteemed and respected by all who knew him, although suffering intensely form the malady which consumed him, he bore it all with Christian fortitude, his great solicitude being the comfort and welfare of his devoted wife and children. He was a living husband and father, a good citizen and a staunch friend. The funeral was largely attended and was held at St. Joseph’s church at Neptune, Rev. Father Tierney officiating. The pall bearers were John Harker, George Harker, Dennis Phillips, Mike Kennedy, Frank Staebel and Thomas Redmond. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their great affliction. He was an exemplary Catholic and died fortified by all the rite of the church he loved.
