He married Mary Malloy on July 2, 1855 in NY. They had 7 children: Patrick, Rose Ann, Mary Josephine, John Francis Jr, James Lawrence, Michael M, and Edward Henry. John Carlin came to America in about 1845 and settled in Canton, MA where he lived for 20 years. He married Mary Malloy in New York City in 1855. He came to Lawler (Chickasaw), IA and on June 10, 1872 he bought land from his brother Patrick Carlin. Here he lived N.W. of Lawler (Chickasaw), IA. The Catholic church near the Carlin farm burned and John gave part of his land to the church and some money and they rebuilt it. The new church was called Sacred Heart Church, Reilly Ridge, IA. In the windows of this church were the names of our ancestors, like: Carlon, Galligan, Kelly, McGinn & Welsh. The church has since burned to the ground. OBITUARY provided by Ellen Sorenson on December 31, 2011: Carlin died at his home in Utica Township, Jan. 24, 1910, John Carlin Sr. aged 82 and 8 months. Mr. Carlin was born in County Longford, Ireland, Oct. 14, 1827, where he resided until 18 years of age. When he came to this country and settled in Canton, Mass. where he resided for twenty years. It was while here that was united in marrage to Miss Mary Molloy in New York city, in 1855, who died nine years ago. In 1865 he came west and homesteaded the farm in Utica on which he resided until the time of his death. { John bought the farm from his brother Patrick when he came to Iowa. So Patrick was the original homesteader of this land.} This gave him a residence in this county of over 44 years, and makes him one of the pioneers of this section of the state of Iowa. No man was more highly esteemed than he, by all who knew him. He was a kind and sympathetic neighbor, a loyal friend and industrious citizen and an excellent and true christian. By his death, the family loses its best counselor, the community one of its time-honored members, and the state a valuable citizen. His surviving children are: Patrick, Mary, James and Edward of Armour, South Dakota. Rose, John and Michael residing on the old homestead, all honored and respected citizens in the community in which they reside. The funeral was held Wednesday morning, Jan 26 1910 at the Scared Heart Church, Reilly Ridge, Iowa: the obsequies being conducted by Rev. C. Sampson, who paid a glowing tribute to the exemplary life of the deceased. The pallbearers were: Henry Kelly, Chas Leonard, Edward Smith, John Edward Carlin, James McGinn, and Dan Carlin.
