A Civil war veteran, Kathan came to Iowa, after the war to drive the stage coach between Guttenberg and Dubuque. His last horse race was made here last summer. Kathan had driven race horses for 70 years. He mounted his last sulky and drove in his final race here last summer. He had driven on every important race track in Iowa, and had driven for many prominent Iowa race horse owners. During the war he served with the One Hundred Twenty-fourth New York regiment. One of his first jobs in Iowa was driving the stage coach from Dubuque to Guttenberg. He is survived by three children, Charles, Bert and Kitty, all I Osage. Mason City Globe Gazette, Wednesday, May 21, 1930 #4 KATHAN FUNERAL SERVICES HELD VETERAN OSAGE TURFMAN IN MITCHELL COUNTY DIES FROM FALL Osage, May 23 -- John Kathan, 88, veteran turfman and pioneer Iowan, was buried yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. E. B. Frye of the Methodist church in charge. Mr. Kathan died Tuesday. Mr. Kathan was born in the state of New York, March 25, 1842. He was in the battles of Bull Run, the Wilderness and others with the One Hundred Twenty-fourth New York regiment of the Civil War and when the war was over came to Iowa. He drove the stage coach between Guttenberg and Dubuque. For many years he had been training race horses and his last race was staged last summer. Among his winning horses were Patola, 2:13 ¼, who won 15 out of 16 races in one season; Dulcie, 2:18; Roy, the Kid 7:07 ¼; Buck Muscovite, 2:07 ¼; Blackford 2:13 ¼; Dennie Sullivan 2:13 ½, and others. In 1923 he drove Chetwind, wining all of the eight races. Altho he was in a number of accidents and spills he was never seriously injured until two weeks ago when he fell from his back porch and broke his hop which resulted in his death.
