John Clark and Martha Swinney were married February 6, 1876 in Shelby County, Missouri. Record may be found on page 331 of marriages from 1835 to 1888. ____________________________________________________ The following obituary is from an unspecified newspaper clipping sent to R. Kanatzar by a grandson of Mr. Clark. Please note there is an error of reporting the date of marriage. John Clark died at his home near Leonard Saturday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m., after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Clark was bon in Monroe county March 9, 1847, and died at the age of 65 years, 6 months, and 12 days. He moved from Monroe when a boy and has made his home in this county ever since. He was united in marriage to Miss Martha Swinney in 1847 and to this union were born nine children, all of whome with the mother and are residing in this county except two son, Samuel and William who live at Glenwood, Colo. Mr. Clark has been a member of the Baptist Church for several years, and has always been considered an upright honorable citizen. Funeral services were held at North River Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 3:00 conducted by Rev. George Humphrey of Shelbyville after which the remains were laid to rest in King's cemetery near Leonard. __________________________________________________ Shelby County Herald (Shelbyville, Missouri), Wednesday, September 25, 1912, Page 8 Died, at his home, two and one-half miles northwest of Leonard, on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m., John Clark. Mr. Clark's death was not unexpected, as he had been in failing health for some time. Mr. C. was a good christian gentleman, a good neighbor and good citizen. As we are away from our home we cannot give particulars about funeral and burial. This writer with their many friends sympathize with the family in their sad bereavement. __________________________ Per Joni Graeff communication regarding John Clark's son, William Taylor Clark: "...William Taylor Clark was my husband's grandfather. He was born Aug 11, 1889 in Clarence, MO. He married Nellie Johnston ( daughter of George Willard Johnston and Fannie Florence Upton) on June 17, 1911 in Valentine, NE. The Johnstons were from Shelby Co., MO and had recently moved to Nebraska. After they married they lived in Colorado Springs, CO for a short time. Then they lived in Valentine, Wood Lake, and Omaha, NE. They had 4 children. They divorced in 1928, although they had been living apart for awhile before that. The children saw their father once soon after that, then they never saw him or heard from him again. Friends from Omaha stopped by to see one of their (William and Nellie's) daughters, Margaret, in maybe the early 1940's. They said William had died in an institution in Kansas. I have searched for years but have not found any clues. In a newspaper article about Martha, William's mother, it said that it was assumed William was dead as no one had heard from him for years. And in his mother's obit in 1953, it named the children and where they were from, then said "and William"with no city. I put a nice picture of him on familysearch. Let me know what you have! Thanks! John Clark, the oldest child of Alex and Hilda Clark was born in Monroe County, Mo., March 9, 1847, passed away peacefully and gently at his home near Leonard Saturday Sept. 21, 1912 at 2 p.m. surrounded by his loved ones. Age 65 yrs. 6 months and 12 days. He came to Shelby County when a small boy and was raised to manhood on a farm near Hagers Grove. He was married to Miss Martha Swinney, Feb. 6, 1876 and moved on a farm three miles north of Leonard where he lived at the time of his death. To this union nine children were born, five sons and four daughters: Mrs. Jno. Botkins of Shelbina, Robert who lives on the home place, Samuel and William of Glenwood Springs, Colo., Dee of near Clarence, Roy of Cherry Box, Mrs. Fred Vickers of Hagers Grove, Misses Leona and Belle at home. All with their mother survive him and were at his bedside but two sons, Samuel and William. Mr. Clark had been in failing health for some time suffering from asthma. Everything with aid of physicians was done that loving hands could do to relieve his suffering but God in his wise way knew best and called him to his home above. He was a kind and loving father and husband. His life was one of intelligence, industrious and a value to the community in which he lived, being courteous to all. He was highly esteemed and respected as a neighbor and citizen. The deceased united with the North River Baptist Church in 1901, under the labor of Rev. G. W. Humphrey learned to love and trust Christ, and in spite of trials and tribulations he remained a faithful follower of his Savior to the end. Funeral services were conducted at North River Baptist Church by Rev. G. W. Humphrey Sept. 22, 1912, 3 p. m. and the mortal remains laid to rest in the Garnett Cemetery as he had requested to await the resurrection morn. A large crowd assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to the one so dearly loved. Thou shalt be missed because they seat will be empty.
