Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. MST today and for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Serving as casketbearers will be Jim Hallen, John Valmer, Wayne Tanous, Ron Hilden, Mike Kelley and Mike Robertson. All of Jack's Navy friends, and members of the West River Regional Medical Center Ambulance Squad are considered honorary pallbearers. Special music will be provided by Norman and Bonnie Smith. John was born on June 29, 1944, in the Springer Hospital to L. Claude Mensing and Amanda K. Klaudt Mensing. Growing up he actually never lived more than a half a block from where he was born. He went to elementary, junior high and high school in Hettinger and graduated in 1962. From there, Jack went to school at NDSU in Fargo and Dickinson State College. On April 22, 1966, he joined the Navy. After boot camp in San Diego, Jack was stationed on the USS Neches AO47 home ported out of Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco. He stayed aboard the Neches until August of 1968, where upon he was transferred to Commander Naval Forces-Korea, in Seoul, Korea. When Jack reached Korea, he became assigned to the Intelligence Office as a naval intelligence clerk. He spent a 13 month tour there, and then was transferred to Naval Air Station-Key West, Fla., where he was attached to the Joint Air Reconnaissance Control Center as an Indications and Warning and also Watch-stander for a command that was in charge of all reconnaissance of Cuba. He was there from 1969 to 1973. In 1973, Jack was transferred to Commander Submarine Group 7 in Yokosuka, Japan. He stayed there until 1976, at which point he was selected for conversion to a new rate that was established, called Intelligence Specialist. When Jack transferred from Japan, he went to Intelligence Specialist A School at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colo. He spent three months there, before being transferred to the USS Constellation until 1979. During this time, he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer. He was then assigned to Director of Naval Intelligence Office in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Here Jack was in charge of the administrative section of the briefers, whose job it was to brief the Chief of Naval Operations and Secretary of the Navy every day of the week. Jack was commissioned to Chief Warrant Officer in 1982. He then spent three months at Pensacola going through "Knife and Fork" School, which was actually warrant officer orientation school. He returned to Washington D.C. for another one year short tour. In 1983, Jack received orders for Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 34 in Point Mugu, Calif. He remained there until 1987. In November 1987, he was transferred to Headquarters NORAD, North American Air Defense Command, in Colorado Springs, Colo. Here he was assigned as the Air Intelligence Watch Officer in Cheyenne Mountain as an Indications and Warning Officer. Jack stayed in Colorado Springs until he retired from the Navy. While stationed there, he was also assigned to the Counter Narcotics Section, where his job was to assist federal law enforcement agencies as a liaison in the war on drugs. Jack's last tour at Colorado Springs had him involved in the Naval Reserve Training Center as Fort Carson as an Executive Officer. After 27 years, 10 days active duty, Jack retired from the Navy on May 1, 1993. Jack lived in Colorado Springs one more year before he returned home to Hettinger. On Oct. 22, 1994, he married Lois J. Adsem. Together, they resided less than a half a block from Jack's place of birth until his death. He received the following naval awards and commendations: Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Navy and Marine Corp Expeditionary Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal. He had the following memberships and belonged to the following organizations: Hettinger Lodge No. 93 A.F. and A.M.; Eagles Aeries No. 3102, North Dakota Game and Fish Department Hunter Safety Education Certified Instructor, Volunteer on the West River Ambulance Squad; Hettinger Lutheran Church Council; Board of Directors of West River Regional Medical Center; and Hettinger City Councilman; and the Hettinger Mayor. Jack was preceded in death by his father, L. Claude Mensing. He is survived by his wife, Lois; his mother, Amanda K. Mensing; one brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Karen Mensing; two nephews, Mark Mensing and Jeff (Deni) Mensing; two great-nephews, Carter and T.J. Mensing; three stepchildren, Kelly (Curt) Pierce, Dean Adsem and Ann Adsem; five step-grandchildren, Quincy and Shelby Pierce, Daemon, Ryan and Ashton Adsem. It was Jack's wish that all memorials be sent to West River Regional Medical Center Ambulance Squad. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger)
