Clifton Matheny experienced a distinct shock Tuesday morning about 10 o'clock when it was learned that he had accidentally shot himself with a high powered gun, and, owing to the severe wound, was in a critical condition. The accident occurred in front of C. G. Ralston's store on South Spruce street where Mr. Matheny had halted his automobile previous to a trip down Back Creek. The gun, which it is understood he was taking with him for the purpose of selling to a friend near Mill Gap, was placed in the front of the car after Mr. Ralston and Mr. Matheny had looked it over, and when ready to start, Mr. Matheny stepped onto the running-board of the car, took the gun by the barrel and lifted or moved it to another position. In doing so it possibly came in contact with the levers of the car, and being a hammerless gun was easily discharged. The ball—one of the large, steel-jacket variety, struck him near or in the right groin, passed upward, and out at the top of the hip bone, went through the store window and lodged in the ceiling of the room. Eye witnesses say that the unfortunate man stepped from the running board, but sank down at once in a heap on the pavement. He was carried into the store and.Dr. Fox was summoned. Later he was taken to his home near by, and hurried efforts made to secure a Staunton surgeon. After some delay, Dr. Tynes and Dr. C. C. Jones were said to be on the road, and to hasten their arrival, Mr. Matheny's own car, driven by Tom Hicklin, was sent to meet them. They reached here about 4:30, and an operation was at once decided upon. This was performed about 7 o'clock the patient passing through the ordeal as well as could be expected. It was found that several perforations had been made in the bowels and the top of the hip bone, rear of the body, had been shattered by the ball. He rallied after the operation and passed the night as comfortably as could be expected. Mr. Matheny is a prominent business man of the town, and no one in the county has a wider circle of friends. He was for many years cashier of the First National Bank of Highland, and has, since early manhood, been prominently identified with public affairs of the county. He is also widely known among Virginia insurance men. In spite of the heavy odds against, him, his host of friends at home and abroad hope that he will recover. Latest news from Mr. Matheny, just before going to press, is that he is still resting quietly, and doing as well as could be expected. His sister, Mrs. I. C. Wagner, of Covington, accompanied by her little daughter, Cecelia, reached Monterey early (Thursday) morning. Highland Recorder April 28, 1922 Wednesday morning at 2 o'clock the day following the 46th anniversary of his birth, J. Clifton Matheny, prominent citizen of Monterey, succumbed to the wound accidentally inflicted while handling a high-powered rifle gun two weeks ago, April 11. As stated in last week's issue of the Recorder, his condition was such for a day or two last week as to give a faint hope of ultimate recovery, but during the forty-eight hours previous to the end, he was subjected to sinking spells that weakened him rapidly and all hope had to be abandoned. The operation performed soon after the accident afforded only temporary relief and prolonged life, the desperate character of the wound being such as to preclude the possibility of recovery despite ablest surgical skill and attention. Of this fact no one seemed more certain than Mr. Matheny himself, and he bore his suffering with marked patience and met the issue with resignation. Mr. Matheny was born April 24, 1876, a son of the late Capt J. C. Matheny, and his entire life spent in Monterey. In 1902 he was married to Miss Lenore Bird, of Missouri, by whom he is survived, with two interesting little children, Frances, aged 12. and J. C. Jr., aged 8. One brother, W. H. Matheny, clerk of the circuit court, also survives, and he has two living sisters, Mrs. Robert Ruff of Lexington, and Mrs. I. C. Wagner, of Covington. Possessed of a jovial, cordial disposition, warm-hearted and kind, he made lasting friendships, and perhaps no one in the county could boast of a larger circle of friends. He was generous and charitable almost to a fault, every benevolence and call of need finding a quick and liberal response from him. In fact, it is known that many deeds of kindness and timely helpfulness were done without the knowledge even of those intimately associated with him, the only record of them being in "the book of the Kingdom" and on the tablets of grateful hearts. Mr. Matheny was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and was liberal and faithful in his support of all its institutions. Prior to the World War he was teacher of an organized class of young men in the Methodist Sunday school but the ranks were so decimated by deaths and removals that he has since attended as a scholar, but always enthusiastic and interested. He was also an enthusiastic and prominent Mason and Odd Fellow, a member the two home lodges and widely known in fraternity circles throughout the state. Prior to his resignation some two years ago he was for a long time cashier of the First National Bank of Highland, succeeding the late J. A. Jones. After severing his connection with the bank he gave his entire attention to the insurance business, and in this capacity he was eminently successful, ranking high among the insurance men of the State. Wherever and by whomsoever known, whether as neighbor, friend, craftsman or business associate, his death, in the prime of life and vigor of manhood, attended as it was by such sad, tragic circumstances, will be deeply deplored. Mr. Matheny's. funeral will take place this afternoon at 1 o'clock, about the hour the Recorder closes its forms, and will be conducted from the Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. R. D. McNeer. At the grave, it is expected that the Masons will be in charge of the burial service, the local lodge of Odd Fellows attending in body. A number of nonresident fraternity men expressed their purpose to be present also. The bearers will be the following members of Mr. Matheny's Sabbath school class: John E. Slaven, David Rexrode, John Gillespie, Byron Beverage, Don Sullenberger, Luther Jones. While the statement has not been authorized it is expected that Judge Holt out of deference to Clerk Matheny, will adjourn court during the funeral hour.
