Description	:	Son of Samuel Coit and Elizabeth Richards Ely. Settled in New London, and for some years followed the sea. He built, with his father's assistance, the first vessel of the class called "smack" (having a well for the transportation of fish alive,) and continued in the fishing and coating business, until admonished by years to retire, but was engaged in the repairing of vessels and the cultivation of his land until a late period in his long life, throughout which he sustained a character for industry, honesty, integrity, and piety. He was admitted to the Congregation church, Aug 17, 1788, and at his death was one of the oldest members. He died April 22, 1853, aged 86 years. During the war of 1812, he had his share of loss and dangers, at one time making a visit to Commodore Hardy of the British squadron off New London harbor, in the hope of ransoming his son and his vessel, but failing therein, and tantalized with the sight of his vessel in flames.
