Description	:	MOTHER: Anna Elizabeth Koch FATHER: Johannes Casper Sell John Conrad Sills was born on December 15, 1738 at Rothen Bergen in the county of Assenburg, Germany . [He] emigrated from Germany in 1763 and settled in Dutchess County, New York. [Sills] married Anna Maria Emich, the daughter of a prominent Palatine (French Huguenot) family, and acquired 300 acres of land on the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. From his own account, in 1777 he had cleared 20 of the 300 acres, built a house, owned 6 horses, 4 cows, 2 calves, a bull, sheep and pigs. At the age of 38, Sills was living a comfortable life and content with the colonial system - not sharing his neighbors’ sense of alienation from Europe. When the Revolutionary War began, he enlisted in 1777 as a Loyalist with Butler's Rangers at Fort Stanwix to defend the King. Sill's wife, Anna Maria, died between 1777 and 1779, and the children were taken to Trois-Rivières (Three Rivers) refugee camp in Quebec, Canada, where John would eventually join them. After the war, Loyalists found it difficult to return to their former homes in America. Sills and his children joined the mass migration of about 40,000 displaced loyalist and their families who settled in Canada. John Sills remarried a widow named McNabb, but his new wife was not fond of frontier life and refused to accompany Sills to the Bay of Quinte in 1784. Sometime later [Sills] married Sarah Blanchard, the widow of a discharged soldier, and together they had nine children.
