Saunders, the subject of this sketch, was burn about one half mile west of McDowell, at the old Eagle homestead, November 26th, 1831, and died March 5th, 1916, at his residence, Thorn, W.Va., having reached the ripe age of 84 years, 3 months and 9 days. He was the only son of Thomas Saunders, who came to Highland at that time Pendleton, from East Virginia, sometime before the war between the States and married Margaret Eagle, daughter of Christian Eagle. John Saunders married Miss Mary Hiner daughter, of the late John Hiner, Sept. 11, 1863, and three children were the result of this union, Margaret Olive, Mrs. Arthur Hiner and Mattie C. who died when she was just budding into womanhood, and in less than a year the cruel hand of death took the wife and mother. Be economy and judicious management, Mr. Saunders had acquired an estate of about $40,000. His large colonial residence is an ideal home, from which always emanated an air of hospitality; one always felt that the "Latch string was on the outside." He was never happier than when entertaining his friends; and he will be sadly missed He united with the Methodist church at this place a number of years ago and died in the faith. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 11 a.m. by Rev Wendell Allen, in the Doe Hill church, and his remains interred in the cemetery by the side of wife and daughter.
