Description	:	Crossville Chronicle February 6, 1931 John C Kemmer died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G L Hill, North Crossville, Saturday morning after an illness of a few weeks as the result of an operation for an enlarged prostate gland. Had he lived until August 2, he would have been 77. Burial took place at Grassy Cove Monday in the family graveyard, beside his wife, who passed away in 1927. Services were conducted by Rev Cartwright. Born and reared in the beautiful little cove 12 miles south east of Crossville, he had all his life been a successful farmer and merchant. By his ceaseless industry, coupled with keen business judgement, he had acquired land and property much in excess of $100,000. Always a man of much generosity and kindness to those who visited his hospitable home, he had a wide circle of friends who held him in high esteem for his generosity and business acumen. One man remarked to the writer Monday that he believed "John Kemmer had fed more hungry people than any man in Cumberland county". He was the son of A R and Elizabeth Kemmer and the eldest of 11 children. At about the age of 24 years, he married Miss Salissa Johnson. To this union, 6 children were born, 5 of whom survive him. They are J A, J C Jr, Mrs. G L Hill, Mrs. R A Powell and Mrs. W T Bristow, all of whom reside in this county. He is survived by the following brothers: D C, S C and C E Kemmer of Spring City; A C of Crossville and R E of Grassy Cove. He had for many years been a member of the M E Church South and contributed generously to the construction of a new brick church a short distance from his home. H/O Salissa Jane Kemmer
