Mrs. Albers, nee Mary Westhusen, came to the U.S. with her parents and settled in Chicago. Mr. Albers worked on a German merchant vessel. Leaving his native country while young, he came over and located in Chicago, where he drove a street car, with horses. John and Mary were married in Chicago in 1885 and immediately came west to the Dakota Territory, where Mr. Albers had picked a tract of land and erected a dwelling the year before. They were among the first settlers in the vicinity of Hannover, 18 miles north of New Salem. They lived on this farmstead until 1919, when they moved to Center. The Albers had two sons and three daughters. John died in 1900 at the age of eight. Fred J. continued to operate the farm after his father retired, and until he died, last February 10th. Fred's wife and son remain on that farm. Howard has been farming with his dad several years. There are three daughter: Amelia, Mrs. August Oestreich, Minnie, Mrs. Henry Meyer of Hannover, and Ada, Mrs. Henry Mahlman, Bismarck. Brave indeed were those "Old Timers" to bear the hardships. All this they did for us. We pause when we remember the Dakota blizzards, the devastating prairie fires, and nothing to stop them. In 1891, John D. Albers lost all the hay, grain, barn and almost everything but the house by a prairie fire. At that time the Dakota Territory was all prairie, no roads, bridges, or fences. Their only guide was the sun, moon, and stars. Their means of conveyance and travel was by horse and wagon. An incident occurred when John D. and John Albers Sr. had gone to town to get a supply of flour. On the way back darkness overtook them and they decided to camp for the night. Early the next morning they heard a rooster crowing and they were close to home. The Albers witnessed the Indian Scare, fortunately that did not come to pass.
