Crawford 1849-1923 +Confederate Soldier (1861-1865) Died during WBTS (1861-1865) OBITUARY from 1906 Mr. John Crawford was born near Galivants Ferry, SC Nov. 10, 1850 & died Oct. 9, 1906 near Bucksville, SC (where he worked at the sawmill). He had been in feeble health for a long time, being scarcely able to work for the support of his family, although he did what he could as his physical condition would permit. For some weeks he was confined to the house. His sickness was long & distressing, but he was sustained by the everlasting arms which was underneath him. He leaves a wife, 3 sons (Arthur Shepard, John R., Edward "Dock" Crawford) & 2 daughters (Exa May & Inez Crawford) to mourn their loss. While they deeply feel their loss they are assured by the blessed promises of Jesus that he is now at rest in that land bright and fair in the city of many mansions. He was married (about 1883) to Miss Lou Collins of Galivants Ferry (formerly of Ariel, Marion, SC) & made a loving husband & kind father. He was converted in 1891 & has lived a Christian life ever since, although he had crosses & trials with severe illnesses in his family, all he bore with Christian fortitude. Shall I linger at the river Waiting for those I love, Yes, you too, may shortly follow, To that city far above. Signed: TKS (His body was brought back to Galivants Ferry, SC for burial in his family cemetery on Tobacco Leaf Lane, now lost to wilderness). According to oral history John Crawford stood 6 ft. & 6 inches tall. Obituary gleaned from THE HORRY HERALD Oct. 18, 1906. Cause of Death: Stroke (death certificates were not issued in SC until 1915). According to Register of Deeds in Horry, SC John Crawford sold 115 acres for $1000 on Jan. 3, 1906 to George Holliday. Located near Tredwell Swamp (Galivants Ferry). Also later in the year sold 75 acres at North East side of Little Pee Dee River on Dawsey Swamp for $200 in 1906 (while on his death bed). This cemetery is now lost to wilderness. Located on Tobacco Leaf Lane, near Aynor/Gal. Ferry, SC area. A footstone has been placed at the foot of his daughter, Inez C.
