Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, March 31st at 3:00 p.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Big Stone City. Father Daniel Wolfgram and Father Douglas Binsfeld will officiate and burial will be in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday at St. Charles Catholic Church beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a scripture and rosary service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to the Mass. Father Daniel Wolfgram and Father Douglas Binsfeld will officiate and burial will be in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren. Military honors will be provided by American Legion, Gertje-Van Lith Post #229. Music will be presented by Paula Rausch, guitarist and the St. Charles Funeral Choir. John D. "Jack" Cloos was born on May 22, 1928, in Corona, SD. He was born to Alan and Elizabeth (Scoblic) Cloos. While growing up his family lived at Linden Beach, Webster, and Bristol. In 1943, they moved to Seattle, WA where Jack worked in the Navy yard at Bremerton, in support of the war effort. Jack joined the Marines in 1946, and was honorably discharged in August of 1948. He moved back to Big Stone and served in the National Guard, while working at Hunter Granite. In 1950, Jack was called to active Army service for 2 years during the Korean War. When he returned, he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis for welding and blacksmithing. Jack married Joan Cordie on April 25, 1953 at St. Charles Catholic Church, Big Stone City. They made their home in Minneapolis. In 1954, they moved back to Big Stone where he opened a blacksmithing and body shop business with his brothers and later a filling station. In April of 1963, Jack became a rural mail carrier, retiring in December of 1989, after 26 years of service. Jack was a member of the Gertje-VanLith American Legion Post #229, served on the Big Stone City Volunteer Fire Department and the Big Stone City School Board for many years. He was an active member of his community, always ready to lend a helping hand. Jack enjoyed fishing Big Stone Lake, hunting, gardening, making wine and reading. He especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 56 years, Joan; his children: Jim (Jolene), Dave, Bob (Denise), Roger (Lori), Todd (Candee), Cathy (Barry) Gerber and Janet (Tom) Waibel; 18 grandchildren and brothers: Gerald and Gene (Bev). He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sons.
