Lucy, 86, pioneer resident of Burke County who died February 16, (1954) at Long Beach, California, where he had spent the winters in recent years. J. D. Lucy was born in Rosemont, Minn., on August 8, 1868. In 1891 he was united in marriage to Catherine Reese of Hemming, Minn. They resided there until 1902 when they came to North Dakota and settled on a homestead in what lager became Lucy Township of Burke County. They farmed here until 1920 when they moved to Powers Lake where they resided until the death of Mrs. Lucy in 1944. Since then he had divided his time between Burke County and Long Beach. During his long residence here he was active in various civic affairs serving on the school and township boards and he took an active part in the division of Imperial Ward County. He was the first sheriff of Burke County. He is survived by seven sons. They are: Timothy, Ben, William of Lucy Township; Lawrence of Powers Lake; Raymond of Long Beach, Calif., LeRoy of Seattle, Wash., and Wayne of Billings, Mont., Three sisters also survive him. They are Mrs. Nora Aurned, North Platte, Neb., Mary Norris, Casselton, and Nellie Gerwin of Melfort, Sask., Twenty-three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Preceding him in death are a son John, who died in his youth, a daughter, Mrs. C. Mitbo who died in 1931. Active pallbearers were his sons, Ben, Bill, Lawrence, Ray, Wayne and LeRoy. Honorary pallbearers were D. C. Moore, Douglas Ralston, Ralph Schudor, Anton Olson, Martin Amundson and Dick Owings. Solemn holy requiem high mass was held at the St. James Catholic Church in Powers Lake. Rev. Dr. F. J. Nelson was the celebrant, Father John Moore of Kensal and Father Coon of Noonan were deacons. Those attending the funeral service from a distance were: Mr. & Mrs. D.C. Moore, Devils Lake; Mrs. & Mrs. I. Jendro, Casselton; Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Morris and sister E. Wheitland, Mr. & Mrs. Amos King, North Platte, Neb.; Mr. & Mrs. Geo. Genon and mother Nellie Gerwin, Melfort, Sask.; Mr. & Mrs. M. Kabeary, Glasgow, Mont.
