Potter was born in Hartford, Licking county, Ohio, July 27, 1830 and departed this life at Rochester, Cedar county, Iowa, April 26, 1902, aged almost 72 years. Mr. Potter had been in failing health for a long time and was a great sufferer. He was married to Miss Lavina Reed in Ohio in 1850. To them were born three sons, W. O. of Olene, Oregon, J. Potter was born in Hartford, Licking county, Ohio, July 27, 1830 and departed this life at Rochester, Cedar county, Iowa, April 26, 1902, aged almost 72 years. Mr. Potter had been in failing health for a long time and was a great sufferer. He was married to Miss Lavina Reed in Ohio in 1850. To them were born three sons, W. O. of Olene, Oregon, J. H. of Breckenridge, Missouri and Dr. L. F. of Rochester, Iowa, a veterinary surgeon. He moved with his family to Iowa in 1855. His life companion departed this life three years later. Ten years later, in 1868, he married Mrs. Kate Jack. To this union was born one son, Dr. J. S. Potter of Iowa City, also a practicing veterinary surgeon. The departed was converted in early life and united with a Christian church in Ohio. On coming to Iowa he took up membership with the Free-will Baptist church at Bethel southwest of Rochester and continued an active member for many years. The funeral services were held in this church Monday, April 28, Rev. J. K. Shiffer preaching the sermon. A large gathering of friends, neighbors and old acquaintances witnessed the high esteem in which the deceased was held. He was also a member of the Masonic Fraternity. A good representation of his brethren was present and the impressive burial service of the Order was used at the grave. The widow and four sons and a large family of brothers and sisters remain to mourn his departure. Two of his sons, Drs. L. F. and J. S. Potter, were present at the funeral, also a cousin Rev. Nathan Potter of Olin, Iowa.
