John D. Rhodes died at his home in Wyoming, Friday evening, June 12th, and the announcement of his demise came as a surprise to the community. It was only a few days ago that he was on our streets greeting his friends. He had been in failing health for several months. Friday afternoon, feeling weary, he said he would take a nap. About supper time his wife called him for his evening meal, and sad to relate, the life had flown and apparently without struggle he had passed away. Mr. Rhodes was born in Licking, Ohio, April 10, 1832. At the age of 19 years he came to Iowa, locating in the western part of Jackson County. In 1857 he was united in marriage to Miss Ann James. To this union eight children were born, three having died in childhood. For many years he has been a resident of Jones County and has been one of its substantial citizens. He is survived by his wife and five children, namely. F.M. Rhoades of Davenport, Mrs. Margaret Schamel of Wyoming, Will Rhodes and Mrs. Elva Franks of Miles, John W. Rhodes of Baldwin. Mr. Rhodes came to Wyoming in 1863. The funeral service was held in the M.E. church Monday forenoon at ten o'clock, the pastor, Rev. H.E. Wilcox officiating. At the conclusion of the service the body was laid to rest in the Wyoming cemetery. A good citizen has gone to his rest. Mr. Rhodes took quite an interest in public affairs and by word and deed emphasized the supremacy of civic righteousness. For several years he was a member of the town council and performed his duty fearlessly and impartially. He occupied a prominent place in the official board of the M.E. church and was faithful and loyal in the discharge of his duties. Now that he has gone to his reward we shall remember him with tender memory and cherish the thought of his friendly greetings, sterling manhood and exemplary citizenship. NOTE: e-mail received Feb 2018 from Dorothy Alvis has sent the following - John D. Rhodes mother was Mary Thomas, who died 1 Dec. 1853, Licking Co.. OH. After the death of her husband Christian, she married Joseph Scott, and had children Martha and Elias.
