Flournoy, 87, pioneer of Modoc County and well known throughout California, died here Sunday in the home of his son, from the infirmities of age. Flournoy was the father-in-law of W.O. Long's sister. Flournoy, 87, pioneer of Modoc County and well known throughout California, died here Sunday in the home of his son, from the infirmities of age. Flournoy was the father-in-law of W.O. Long's sister. Flournoy was one of the earliest settlers of the South Fork section. He founded a livestock business which later became known as the J.D. Flournoy Cattle Company. The deceased was born in Missouri February 25, 1847. He crossed the plains to California when he was 17 years old, driving a herd of 200 cattle. A few years later he came to Modoc County and settled in South Fork Valley, near Likely. Indians in the section still were on the warpath when Flournoy first moved into the South Fork section, but he obtained their friendship and became sort of an advisor to them. At one time he is credited with averting trouble between the settlers and the Pit River Tribe of Indians. He was a prominent figure in early Modoc County life. The deceased leaves his wife and four sons, William H. Arthur, and Eldon Flournoy of this section, and Harry Flournoy of Manteca, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
