Description	:	DMY and place of birth from US military pension research documents. Census records show that John was born to parents Rodman & Mary Ann (Alderman) Lewis, in 1845 Ohio. The family moved and John grew up in Farmington, Iowa. 12 Feb 1863, 17-year-old John enlisted in the US Army and was assigned to Iowa's 7th Cavalry Regiment. After 15 months of service, Corporal Lewis of Co A, 7th Iowa Cavalry mustered out of the Army on 17 May 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, KS. John was a tinsmith and made his living in the mining district of the San Luis Valley of Colorado. Monte Vista Historical Society reports that John was the town clerk and recorder and was among 36 active members of John Hooker Post No. 16, Grand Army of the Republic, 1988-1894, meeting 1st Tuesday of each month @ the Soldiers & Sailors Home in Monte Vista. John passed 1901 in Monte Vista, Colorado. His parents, a sister & his son preceded him in death. He was survived by a brother living in Washington State, a sister and a half-brother both living in Farmington, Iowa, a half-brother living in St Paul, Minnesota, and his wife, Nettie H Lewis. Homelake Cemetery gravesite report 1-p lists John D Lewis, Woodman of the World b. 1846, d. 1901. John's Obituary Friday morning, February 1, John D Lewis, aged 56 years, of Pneumonia. Deceased has been a citizen of Monte Vista for a number of years, where he held positions of honor and trust and at the time of his death was town clerk and recorder. John was a very kind and public-spirited man, and a member of GAR Woodman and Fraternal Aid Association. The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 3rd at the Methodist Church.
