John was born to Lucille (Wuebben) and Kenneth Bowder on July 2, 1948, in Wenatchee, Wash. He was raised in the Emerson area and graduated in 1966 from Sacred Heart High School in Emerson. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1968 and served in the Pacific Region until 1972. He married Mitsue Yazawa and together they had three children, Kenneth, Robert and Natalie, all who reside in Japan. He returned briefly to the United States and worked at Iowa Beef Packers in Dakota City from 1972 to 1973. He then returned with his family to Japan, where he began his career as an English teacher in the Christian School system in Japan where he served until 1991. He then obtained his most current position as an English teacher for the Public School system of Japan, where he taught and coached basketball for the past 11 years. He also worked with the Japanese Airlines serving as a tutor. He also served as a guide/sponsor for trips to the United States allowing Japanese students to experience the American culture. He is survived by his wife, Mitsue of Japan; his children, Kenneth, Robert and Natalie, all of Japan; five brothers and their wives, George and Wanda of Fairbanks, Alaska, Randy and Liesa of Pender, Neb., Steve and Paula of Lincoln, Neb., Keith and Wanda of Lincoln, and Mark and Melissa of Omaha; three sisters and their husbands, Laura and Richard Husman of Merrill, Iowa, Linda and Matt Maloy of Seminole, Fla., and Bonita and Larry Severson of Eagle, Neb.; and 28 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Lucille Bowder; a brother, Dennis; and a niece, Kathleen Maloy. ..Sioux City IA Journal 05OCT2002.
