Before he completed his first year his parents came with him to America settling in Iowa county on a farm in Lincoln township. JOHN REFER CALLED TO FINAL REWARD AFTER AN ILLNESS OF SEVERAL MONTHS John Dietrich Refer was born May 9, 1868, in Oldenburg, Germany. Before he completed his first year his parents came with him to America settling in Iowa county on a farm in Lincoln township. In his boyhood days he attended St. John's Lutheran school, graduating in the Lutheran faith. Having grown to manhood he was married to Miss Margaret Schmidt, January 19, 1894. This union was blessed with seven children, three sons and four daughters. Some years ago he moved to Victor but after some time sold out his business and returned to his farm in Lincoln township. September 10th of last year he was stricken with paralysis. This rendered him helpless and speechless. Later on his condition improved a little so that he could move around and utter a few words, to the delight of his family. Towards spring he grew weaker and on the 8th day of April he quietly passed away. Having repeatedly expressed the wish to be buried in Victor his earthly remains were brought to Victor April 10th and laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Rev. Otto Kitzmann, his pastor, preached an appropriate funeral sermon in St. John's Lutheran church, taking for his text I Cor. 15, 16-20. He leaves to mourn their loss his widowed wife, seven children, three brothers and one sister, and a host of friends. ---------------------------------------------------- Wife Margaret Sophia Smith (Schmidt) Refer 1877-1961
