Description	:	John Donald Whitehurst (Don), 88, passed away Friday Dec. 11 at the Vidant hospice in Greenville. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 am at St. James United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church. Son of Ethel and Louis Whitehurst, Don was born and raised in Greenville on the corner of Chestnut St and Paris Ave with nine siblings. Read More	John Donald Whitehurst (Don), 88, passed away Friday Dec. 11 at the Vidant hospice in Greenville. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 am at St. James United Methodist Church. Son of Ethel and Louis Whitehurst, Don was born and raised in Greenville on the corner of Chestnut St and Paris Ave with nine siblings. He joined the Navy at 17 years of age and after completing his duty he attended ECTC in 1946. It was at ECTC where he met the love of his life Helen West Whitehurst, they later married in 1949. Don got his first job in Raleigh with General Mills, but found his true calling as a car salesman working for Sanders Motor Co. In 1954 he joined Ed Davenport in the Ford business in Farmville. Ed remains his very best friend to this date. After several years in the car business Don and Helen designed and built the Candlewick Inn on Stantonsburg Rd Greenville. The Candlewick seated 350 people and was built in the image of Christiana Campbell’s in Williamsburg, VA. After selling the Candlewick in 1971 Don returned to the automobile business as a Pontiac, Buick, and GMC dealer in Tarboro. In 1986 Don started American Truck Center in Winterville where it is still in operation. Don was preceded in death by his daughter Dona Norwood Whitehurst. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Helen West Whitehurst, son Reid L Whitehurst and wife Laura of Greenville, grandsons Lou Whitehurst and wife Bethany of Charlotte and Bret Whitehurst of Greenville, brother Bynum J Whitehurst and wife Sarah of Greenville. Don was a cancer survivor and overcame many physical ailments over the years. It was his positive attitude and spiritual strength that allowed him to live a good life. One of his favorite quotes was “This too shall pass”. Don loved nature his and church “St James Methodist” and his Sunday school class (he referred to as a special group of senior men) where he shared in teaching. And lastly Don loved his employees at American Truck whom he considered as family. Especially Wanda Warren who worked for Don for 41 years. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to St James United Methodist Church, 2000 E. 6th St., Greenville, NC 27858.
