Description	:	Mr. John Dove was born in Brechin, Forffirshire, Scotland, of parents David and Christina Dove.. He married Helen/Ellen Mclaggen, and, when 28yrs. of age, finding it far from an easy task to support a family from the proceeds of his labor, he thought of trying his fortune in a foreign land. Leaving his native country, he immigrated in 1833. The brothers, Peter and John Smith, townsmen of hiswere located in Andover. Read More	Mr. John Dove was born in Brechin, Forffirshire, Scotland, of parents David and Christina Dove.. Leaving his native country, he immigrated in 1833. The brothers, Peter and John Smith, townsmen of hiswere located in Andover. It also appeared that Mr. Smith, engaged in the manufacture of machinery, needed a well-trained machinist to oversee his shop, and Mr. Dove was just the right man for the place and was made superintendent of machinery. In this employment he found much pleasure. In 1835, the Messrs. Smith & Dove entered into an agreement to form a partnership for the manufacture of flax thread, calling it Smith & Dove Manufacturing Company, the first successful manufacturers of flax thread by machinery and power in the country. They had no competitors at the start, nor for some time after, in America. Business succeeded and expanded. In 1864 the firm underwent some modifications. A joint stock company was organized. The sons of the original proprietors — Joseph W. (now president of the company), son of John Smith, James B., son of Peter Smith, George W. W., son of John Dove— and George H. Torr were taken into the company.
