Muldoon of Batavia, Iowa, was the informant of John's information on his death record. John married Clara C. Elder in 1864 in Wapello County, Iowa. One summary of the marriage record in both familysearch.org and ancestry.com gives the date as June 1, 1864; another summary, also in both familyserach.org and ancestry.com, gives the date of September 18, 1864. I do not know what is correct. By the time of the 1880 Census, John Downey, widowed was living in Locust Grove Township, Jefferson County, Iowa, with six children: Mary A., 15; William, 12; Jane, 11; Sarah E., 9; Clara, 2; and Robert H., 1. --------------- Obituary From “Ottumwa Tri-Weekly Courier,” Thursday, September 26, 1907, Page 8: Deaths DOWNEY – September 24, 1907, John Downey, at his late home, four miles north of Batavia, at 9:30 o’clock this morning. The deceased is survived by several children, his wife having preceded him in death some time ago. The funeral services will be held Thursday morning from St. Patrick’s church of this city, Rev. James Bulger officiating. The interment will be made in Calvary cemetery.
