He was born in the townsland of Rathloghan, Parish of Kingscourt, Co Meath. His parents were James Downey and Catherine (Farrelly). His brother Mathew Downey and family are buried in this cemetery also. (Note: Birth date has been shown as 13 Nov 1839, though that conflicts with other dates, including the age shown on his gravestone. Thank you, Mimi!) Update: We have subsequently learned that there was also a middle brother, James, who remained behind in Rathloghan, Co Meath, Ireland. There are many of his descendants in the Kingscourt, Co Cavan area.
