John was born on September 26, 1923, in Butte. He received his schooling in rural schools in the Judith Gap area, graduating from Judith Gap in 1942. John was born on September 26, 1923, in Butte. He received his schooling in rural schools in the Judith Gap area, graduating from Judith Gap in 1942. After graduation, John went to a trade school in Helena, then on to Bremerton WA, to work in the shipyards. John was in the US Navy during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theater as a Gunner's Mate 2nd Class. He returned to the Judith Gap area where he worked at various jobs and farmed and ranched. John married Rosa Lee Beers on June 8, 1947, in Judith Gap. They had 10 children. John and Rosa Lee moved to Winnett in 1969, where John worked construction and as a mechanic until his retirement. He spent his retirement years in Judith Gap, on his brother Harold's ranch in the Snowy Mountains, and in Lewistown. John enjoyed the mountains, fishing, reading, four-wheeling in the mountains, watching birds, and spending time with his family. John's grandchildren and great-grandchildren brightened his days. He especially loved the babies. He was a member of the Judith Gap American Legion Post #70 and the Judith Masonic Lodge #86. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Rosa Lee Lea of Lewistown; his children Linda McEntaffer of Wilmington DE, Terry (Carl) McLaughlin of Judith Gap, Jeanne Jenni of Johnstown CO, Rose Mariy (Steve) Mitchell of Judith Gap, Barbara Lea of Winnett, and Bill Lea of Hobson. John was also blessed with 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, who will miss their grandfather greatly. John is also survived by one brother, Harold Lea of Lewistown, and one sister, Jessie "Alice" Dickerson of LovelandCO, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Agnes Lea; his children Charles Clyde, Patricia Diane, Robert John, and Autumn Dawn; a sister, Mary Barkhoff; and a brother, Benjamin Lea. Graveside services with Masonic Services by Judith Lodge #86 and Military Honors by Judith Gap American Legion Post #70 were held at the Judith Gap Cemetery on Tuesday December 16.
