Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2005, at Gaston First Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Fanning and Rev. Gary Farmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 9 a.m. Honorary escort will be members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Gaston First Baptist Church. Mr. Dowd was born in Lexington County, a son of the late Lonnie B. and Bessie H. Watts Dowd. He had retired from Lexington County Department of Public Works. He was a member of Gaston First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Helen Smith Dowd of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Robert Richardson of Gaston; a stepdaughter, Kay Hiers of Sumter; five stepsons, Donnie Hoover and Frankie Hoover, both of Gaston, Danny Hoover of Lexington, David Hoover of Columbia and Cecil Hoover of West Columbia; four sisters, Mae Furtick and Ruth Furtick, both of Gaston, Loretta Smith of Swansea and Murl Bailey of Salley; three brothers, Carl Dowd, Mitchell Dowd, and Lonnie Dowd, all of Gaston; eight grandchildren, including Samantha, Hope and Charlotte; and a faithful friend, Bobby Ayers. He was predeceased by sisters, Judy Livingston, Pauline Sturkie, and brother, Robert "Amos" Dowd. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North and other times at the home, 828 Mack Street, Gaston. Memorials may be made to Gaston First Baptist Church.
