Mr. Franz has been in business here for years and has been a prominent member of Robert Mitchell post G.A.R. and the M.E. church in this city and will leave many friends who extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved wife and children. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. Interment in Oakshade [sic] where the service will be conducted by Robert Mitchell post, G.A.R. Friends desiring to view the remains can have an opportunity from 10 to 2 o'clock Wednesday. The Marion Sentinel Thursday April 30, 1908 Death of John Franz. John Franz passed away at his home on seventh avenue at 7:45 o'clock Monday evening after an illness of several months with a complication of diseases. While his condition had not been considered immediately serious as he walked to his place of business on Saturday, his death was not unexpected when he commenced to fail rapidly Monday afternoon. The immediate cause of his death was Bright's disease but he had been so affected with asthma that he had been unable to sleep except in a sitting position fo the past three months. The deceased was born June 5, 1849[sic], in Pittsburg, Penn., and came to Iowa with his parents when about three years of age settling near Zwingle in Dubuque county. He resided there until 1864 when at the age of 15 years he enlisted in Company F, 8th Iowa Infantry, serving with honor until his regiment was mustered out at the close of the war. Upon returning to home at the close of the war he went to Anamosa where he worked at his trade which was that of a blacksmith. He moved to Marion in 1874 and since that time has run a blacksmith shop of his own. He was married on Nov. 8th, 1868, to Mary Elizabeth Yount at Anamosa. To this union seven children were born three of whom died in infancy. He leaves a wife and four children, namely Mrs. Frank Snyder of Anamosa, Mrs. George Erwin of Cedar Rapids, Miss Margaret Franz and one son, Jay. All were with him in his last hours except Mrs. Snyder who did not arrive until a few minutes after he had expired. He was converted during the Williams meetings about thirteen years ago and united with the Methodist Episcopal church during the pastorate of Rev. J.G. Van Ness. During all this time he has been an active worker in the church and a regular attendant at all of its services. Robert Mitchell Post, G.A.R., of which the deceased was a member attended the funeral in a body and conducted the services at the grave. The Womans Relief Corps also attended in a body. Interment was in Oak Shade Cemetery.
