John E. Lane was born on January 21, 1928 in Marshalltown to Delmar and Alida (Bru) Lane. He attended Liberty School and graduated in 1944 at the age of 16. After school he began farming in the Illinois Grove with his family. He married Gladys Lutes on August 6, 1950 in Bangor, Iowa. John continued working the land in Illinois Grove until his retirement in 1992. He was very active and was a member at Bethel United Methodist Church, in Zearing, Bangor Liberty Friends Church, in Bangor, Marshall County A.S.C.S., Minerva Valley Telephone Board of Director’s for over 25 years, and Marshall County Farm Bureau. John loved to spend time with his family, farming, taking care of the farm property, socializing, drinking coffee with the old fogies, telling jokes, reading the paper most especially the funny’s, reading, playing games, cards, and dice. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife Gladys Lane; children Linda (Kevin) Miller, and Steven Lane; grandchildren Heather (Travis) Starr, Wade (Kate) Rouse, Paul (Hannah) Lane, Andrew (Kendra) Lane, and Nicolas “Peter” Lane; great-granchildren Madison and Jackson Starr; many nieces, nephews, and close friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Richard.
