Description	:	John was born in 1830 in Ohio of Quaker parents. At the age of 15, he moved with his father's family to Lee County, Iowa where they settled on a farm about 30 miles from Keokuk. His father was an experienced teacher and provided him with a good education, which John completed at Des Moines College. In 1853, he spent six months at the Commercial College in St. Louis. Read More	John was born in 1830 in Ohio of Quaker parents. At the age of 15, he moved with his father's family to Lee County, Iowa where they settled on a farm about 30 miles from Keokuk. His father was an experienced teacher and provided him with a good education, which John completed at Des Moines College. In 1853, he spent six months at the Commercial College in St. Louis. He joined an exploring expedition sent out by the government and continued with it for three years, visiting Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, returning to Iowa in 1856. During the expedition, he acquired a skill as a musician and he cultivated music during the rest of his life; he was a member of the Helena Cornet Band. For several years, he lived in Indianapolis and from there he enlisted and served in the 19th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers and was discharged in March 1862, because of disability. Recovering, he re-enlisted in the 11th Indiana Veteran Volunteers, and was discharged at New Orleans in 1864, for disability. It was during his service in the army that he contracted chronic dysentery. He married Miss Margaret J. Walker in 1862 and they came to Montana in December 1869. John was the Indian Agent for the Navajos in New Mexico but was compelled to resign his position as Agent, and come home to die. On September 8, 1879 he died at his residence in Helena at age 49 from chronic dysentery. His wife, Margaret, and two children, Joseph and Mary, survived him. (Helena Independent, 9/9/1879) The funeral took place from the Presbyterian Church where Rev. Smith preached the sermon. John was the first elder chosen by the Presbyterian Church of Helena. (Helena Independent, 9/11/1879) A plot was purchased in this cemetery by James C. Walker, his brother-in-law, and ex-sheriff of Lewis and Clark County. A very elaborate iron enclosure was placed around his grave. In January 1914, Margaret died and was buried in Forestvale Cemetery, Mountainview Section, Lot 59. Then on May 29, 1915, John was moved to Forestvale Cemetery and buried next to his wife. The elaborate enclosure remains at Benton Avenue Cemetery.
