Description	:	John E. Watrous of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, enlisted as age 20 in May of 1864 in Co. L, 5th Kansas Cavalry. He transferred to the 15th Kansas Cavalry and mustered out in October of 1865. Civil War records state that he was 5' 9" tall, with blue eyes, and light hair and complexion. His widow, Florence L. Watrous, received a Civil War pension in April of 1912. John E. Watrous married Florence L. Smith 14 April 1868. Lester was age 8 and Paul was age 2 in the 1880 census. Rosetta Smith, age 52, born in Indiana, was listed as John's mother-in-law in 1880. Florence L. Watrous was listed as the mother of 4, with 2 living in the 1900 census. The 1910 census shows John with his sisters, Lydia R. Grimes and Helen Watrous. John E. Watrous was listed as a printer, a publisher, and an editor is various census reports. A record from a soldier's home shows that Florence was living in Winfield, Kansas in 1910. Family information from Ancestry.com lists John as a brother of James H. Watrous, who also served in Co. L, 5th Kansas Cavalry, during the Civil War. They were sons of Horace Watrous and Mary Chester. The family was in Dane County, Wisconsin in 1850. John's mother died in 1877 at Burlington, according to family information, and may also be buried here. The father and several siblings resided in Coffey County, but moved to Washington state.
