Bays, Kevin Dillard, Harry Snellings, Darryl Labbe, Jay Skinner, Bob Grim, Joe Adams and Aubrey Meredith. Members of the Baraca Bible Class at Fredericksburg Baptist Church and members of the Fredericksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and state officers for Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Mr. Smith died Sunday, Sept. 4, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Fredericksburg, he had retired as right-of-way engineer for the Fredericksburg district of the Virginia Department of Transportation. He had also worked for the Virginia State Police. He joined the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad in 1940. He held every office in the squad and in 1953 served as captain. He was a life member of the squad here and the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads. He was inducted into the Virginia Life Saving and rescue Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in the formation of the Fredericksburg Junior Rescue Squad. Mr. Smith had been a first aid counselor for the Boy Scouts of America and was an assistant Scoutmaster for more than 28 years. He was active in American Red Cross. He was also a Red Cross first aid instructor and emergency medical technician instructor for many years. Mr. Smith was director of the Rappahannock Emergency Medical Service Council. He was a member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church and was a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran. He was the widower of Frances B. Smith. Survivors include a daughter, Jennie Jones of Fredericksburg; two sons, John E. Smith, Jr. and Clay S. Smith, both of Fredericksburg; a sister, Ann Beasley of Fredericksburg; a brother, Temple Smith of Fredericksburg; and six grandchildren. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Fredericksburg Baptist Church Building Upon Our Heritage Fund, 1019 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401, or to Fredericksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, Box 444, Fredericksburg, Va. 22404.
