"Jack" Cosgrove, 61, veteran Lonaconing miner, was fatally injured today in the Castle Mine of the Big Vein Coal Company. He was suffocated and crushed before other miners extricated his body. His buddy, Thomas McCormick, also of Lonaconing, who was caught under the fall, was rescued by a crew and taken to his home, where an examination reveals superficial bruises about the legs. District Mine Inspector Frank Powers praised the rescue crew for working more than an hour to free McCormick whose legs were caught without serious injury to him. Strinker Broke Lose-McCormick said he and Cosgrove both with more than 40 years experience in mining, were engaged in timbering the roof and were laying stringers when a stringer in another section became dislodged and struck Cosgrove on the head, felling him, and causing a section of roof to collapse. When other miners, attracted by their shouts for aid, reached the trapped men, Cosgrove was dead. Dr. M. J. McDermott later pronounced him dead. The rescue crew then concentrated on the work of releasing McCormick before extricating Cosgrove's body. District Mine Inspector Powers after a preliminary investigation said the accident apparently was unavoidable. Both men were considered experts in timbering work. Was Democratic Leader-Cosgrove, a native of Lonaconing, was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Cosgrove. He was a local leader in the Democratic party and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the United Mine Workers of America. Besides his widow, Mrs. Anna (Wagner) Cosgrove, he is survived by three daughters, Katherine and Bernadette, at home, and Mrs. Leonardo French, Hancock, Md.; a brother, Michael Cosgrove, Westernport, and two sisters, Mrs. Patrick Flynn, Braddock, Pa., and Mrs. Edward Walsh, Grafton, W. Va. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Church, with mass of requiem celebrated by the pastor, Rev. James C. Murphy. Interment will be in the church cemetery."
