World War II veteran John Edward Moss, Sr. has passed away, following a recent illness, at the age of 88. 'Ed' was born in 1924 on the mill village at Cherokee Falls, S.C., and he lived in Cherokee County his entire life, except for his years spent in the Allied Liberation of North Italy. He was a lifelong member of Hopewell Baptist Church. Until the time of his death, he continued to teach a men's Sunday School class that he took over from his father upon his death in 1965. Together, they led that class since the 1930's. He is a Deacon Emeritus. Ed is survived by his wife, Orline Childers Moss, a fellow member of the 1941 graduating class of Blacksburg High School; his children Cathy and John Edward Jr.; his siblings Beatrice Stauber, Sara (George) Johnson, Marlene Earls, Sue (Paul) Patton, George (Sandra), James (Peggy), Jerry (Iris), and Gayle (Dermont) Beam; his grandchildren William L. Owen IV, Catherine (Tom) Marable, Virginia Owen, Chrissy (Aaron) Welch, Carly Moss, and Rachel (Jon) Carroll; and a great granddaughter, Miriam Welch. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Jesse Warren and Louise McSwain Moss; his beloved brother Winfred ('Wimp'), and his younger sisters Modra, Margaret Ann, and Peggy. Ed's highest military honor was the Bronze Star, for 'Heroic and Meritorious Achievement'. In recent years he continued to enjoy yearly reunions with his fellow soldiers from the 88th (Blue Devil) Infantry Division. Ed's employment career was with the Cherokee County manufacturers Burlington Industries, Wendell Fabrics and the Timken Corporation. Ed was an avid golfer who "shot his age" on multiple occasions, had two career holes-in-one, as well as a recent "double eagle". With Orline's prodding, he was a reluctant water aerobics participant. In retirement he was a frequent world traveler. In the past year he made trips to the Holy Lands, South America, and the Falkland Islands. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 26, 2013, 3:00 PM at Hopewell Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 1-3:00 PM preceding the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Grandchildren will serve as Active Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will include the Ed Moss Men's Sunday School Class, the members of the Blacksburg High School Class of 1941, and the Senior Morning Golfers of Cherokee National.
