Mr. Purcell was the founder of St. Edward's council Knights of Columbus, was the council's first grand knight and served as its financial secretary for more than twenty years. Read More	J. E. PURCELL Clinton -- J. E. Purcell, for many years a leader in religious and business activities of the city, died in his home Wednesday, one day before his seventy-fourth birthday. Mr. Purcell was the founder of St. Edward's council Knights of Columbus, was the council's first grand knight and served as its financial secretary for more than twenty years. He was a Fourth Degree member and was accorded the degree of honor a few years ago. He was the first business manager of the downtown headquarters of the Joyce Lumber company. He was a great music enthusiast and played in several bands. Mr. Purcell, the son of James and Mary Purcell, was born April 5, 1866, in Clinton where he spent his entire life. He and Miss Louise Henle of the old town of Lyons were married June 19, 1895, in St. Irenaeus Church. Surviving are his wife, eight daughters, Mrs. Paul (Therese) Dodds of San Francisco, California, Mrs. O. (Louise) Lovering of Hollywood, California, Sister Mary Verona (Anna) of Ft. Dodge, Sister Mary St. Gilberta (Bernardine) of Chicago, Mrs. H. J. (Josephine) Burke, Detroit and Mrs. R. A. (Dorothy) Briggs, Mrs. W. L. (Catherine) Hullinger and Mrs. E. A. (Mary) Moldt, all of Clinton; 15 grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. W. H. Calnan of this city. The funeral was held Saturday in St. Irenaeus Church, with the Rev. E. F. Jackson officiating. O'Neil, Thomas Hayes, Sr., L. Cossman, J. Keefe, Thomas J. Kane, M. Ellwanger, W. H. Carroll, S. N. Robb, Paul F. Kamier, P. J. Cavanagh, T. L. Glendenning and L. Behrend.
