And, so it was in the early hours of the morning of January 31, there came a great sorrow into the hearts of the loved ones of John E. Kauffman, who departed this life at his home in Colesburg, Iowa surrounded by family members and competent medical aid, every effort for relief proved futile. John Kaufman was the son of George and Eliza Schrunk Kauffman born December 7, 1863 in Millville, Iowa, where he grew to manhood and in this vicinity spent a lifetime as a farmer. In 1887, he found a worthy helpmate in Louise De Sotel, with whom he was united in marriage. Thirteen children were born to this union, two having preceded him in death. In 1910, the devoted wife and mother passed to her reward, leaving the father a double duty responsibility of caring for a large family. The broken threads were gathered and threading the severed pathway alone and unafraid the father kept the home fires burning for the little ones. However four years later, he was married to Mrs. Mathilda Grandler Bailey, who also preceded him in death in 1930. Three years later he married Mrs. Sadie Bradfield Hook, who survives his recent passing. In the deceased's characters these traits may be well said to have been outstanding; his untiring devotion to his family, his love for home and his grandchildren, and steadfast friendships of a lifetime, always helping to share with others. He was a self made man, having early in life learned to enjoy simple pleasures and do without many conveniences that we of today believe so essential to our well being. Accepting life's problems but with a purpose in view, he passed through life in a quiet , unobtrusive way, seeking no personal glory. His only thought was for his family and each day found him busy working and planning to make their pathway easier. This respect and devotion to his daily obligations leaves a memory that will long be remembered. Death, having taken his two wives, two children and two grandchildren during a few short years was a cruel blow, but it inspired faith and courage to understand why this must be, but remembering the words of the Master "What I do now, we know not, but ye shall know hereafter" thus he was comforted. Failing health necessitated about a year ago his retirement and he optimistically believed his health would be restored and he never gave up hopes before the final summons came. We often question why must we part with those we love, yet we know death has a mission. It draws us from our surroundings and reminds us of the uncertainty of life, that no man liveth unto himself at a time such as this we know "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away." Those who are left to mourn are his devoted wife, five sons, George of Colesburg, Lou of Edgewood, John of Bloomington, Wisc., Emmett of Greeley, Raymond of Colesburg; six daughters; Mrs. Orrin Ferris, Stizer Wisc., Mrs. Cecil Cree, of Strawberry Point, Iowa; Mrs. Lloyd Harbaugh, of Greeley; Mrs. Muriel Kreisler, of Guttenberg, Mrs. Merton Phelps of Colesburg; and Mrs. Vern Marshall of Bagley, Wisc., 47 grandchildren, 3 sisters, Mrs. Ella Friedlein of Millville, Mrs. Hattie Malwitz of Eau Claire, Wisc., and Mrs. Emma White of Clinton, Iowa, 2 half brothers Fred and Dammon Coleman of Dubuque, Iowa and also nieces and nephews. ++++ The marriage article to Mathilda (Chandler) Baily is in The Guttenberg Press, July 23, 1914, pg. 8.
