Description	:	John Edwin Shumaker, son of John and Amanda Chard Shumaker, was born in Otsego township, Steuben County, July 25, 1864. When a small lad he moved to Steuben township with his parents. There he grew to manhood and was married to Adaline Ringler, of Hudson, Jan. 1, 1886. Read More	John Edwin Shumaker, son of John and Amanda Chard Shumaker, was born in Otsego township, Steuben County, July 25, 1864. When a small lad he moved to Steuben township with his parents. There he grew to manhood and was married to Adaline Ringler, of Hudson, Jan. 1, 1886. To this union was born six sons: Carl, of Angola, Marl, of Hudson, Cleo, of Crawfordsville, Wade, of Union City, and Weir, of Fort Wayne, and one son dying in infancy. Soon after his marriage he took his bride to live on a farm in Salem township where the family lived until the death of his wife, Adaline, who passed away Dec. 19, 1913. Here he continued to maintain a home for his younger sons still at home until Dec. 29, 1914 (exactly 18 years prior to the date of his death) he was united in marriage to Lillie Mortorff Knoder. Two step-daughters came into the home now Edith Wilkins of Fort Wayne and Marjorie Knoder, of Fort Wayne, whom he loved and cherished as his own children. His entire life was spent in Steuben County, he having spent his last years in Hudson, Indiana. While he had been in failing health for several years, he was fatally stricken Thursday morning, December 29th, and passed to the great beyond in a few moments without gaining consciousness at the age of 68 years, 5 months and four days. John Shumaker was a man of sterling character. No man was ever more honored for his integrity than he. No man could ever say that advantage had been taken of him in his dealings. This characteristic along with many of his sterling qualities have been greatly reflected in his family. While he never possessed a large amount of earthly goods he leaves a rich inheritance of character which will continue to live through generations. Any man might well envy this inheritance. He has the strength of his convictions. He was always content with the common things of life, always unpretentious. He was especially fond of children and all who knew him loved him. He was never too busy to help a neighbor in sickness and adversity. He came from a family of eight children, three sisters and four brothers, all who have preceded him in death except Elijah, of Pleasant Lake, and George, of Salem Center, who mourn his passing along with his beloved wife, sons, daughters, daughters-in-law, son-in-law and fourteen grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Hudson, Saturday, December 31st, at 2:00 p.m. The pall-bearers were Bert Wolfe, Earl Wolf, Vern Sparks, A.L. Sunday, Rush Smathers, and Jay Clark; flower-bearers, Doris Clark, Delores Hart, Merle Hedglin, and Glendora Chamberlin. Services were conducted by Rev John Albright, assisted by Rev. Cummins and Rev.
