John met Robert Wylie while working as "Engine Tender" in Glasgow in the RR industry. He married Robert's sister Agnes. They became economic refugees in 1847 in the Great Recession of 1847 (over speculation in the RR industry). The Mormon Church recruited them to come to America while they were in Whithorn, Scotland where Margaret was born in 1848. They (John & Agnes Ellis and Robert Wylie) were presumably on their way to Liverpool anyway. The Isle of Whithorn does have a nominal port from which they sailed to Liverpool. They all (they had 3 children by now.. Margaret, Elizabeth and John) came to America thru New Orleans in 1852 on the ship the "Elvira Owen". Passenger were mostly Mormon recruits. They went thru St Louis and took the Oregon trail to Utah. (Baby John died along the way) Within 5 years, they fled from the Mormons with U.S. Cavalry escort to Ft. Bridger (Rawlins, WY). They objected to the practice of polygamy and left for Nebraska City where they arranged to homestead in Conifer, CO. They ran the stage stop on Kennedy Gulch Rd. named for the family of George and Margaret (Ellis) Kennedy. They joined the new church known as RLDS about that time. - - - Find A Grave contributor Tonie Alldredge Miller kindly provided biographical information for this memorial: John and Agnes Ellis' son, John Ellis, Jr., died, Nov 1859, age 8 years, Otoe Co., Nebraska of intermittent fever.
