The firehouse is draped in black and flags in the county seat are flying at half-staff in honor of Flemington Mayor John E. Bush Jr. who died Saturday March 12, 1977, in the Hunterdon Medical Center, at the age of 72. He had been admitted Feb. 20 suffering from acute bronchitis. Mayor Bush, who lived at 32 New Jersey Avenue, was serving his fifth consecutive term as mayor. A native of Whitehouse, Mayor Bush had resided in Flemington most of his life. He retired in 1967 from the William Stothoff Co. of Flemington Junction, well-drillers. Mayor Bush was a former trustee, deacon and Sunday School superintendent of the Baptist Church, a past master of Darcy Lodge, F&AM, past exalted ruler of Flemington Elks, and a member of Flemington Exempt Firemen's Association. Surviving are his wife, Laura Hall Bush; a son, John E. III, of Flemington; a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Van Derveer of Whitehouse Station; a brother, Grover, of Pt. Pleasant, and six grandchildren. Following the services Tuesday, interment was in Rural Hill Cemetery, Whitehouse, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington.
