Description	:	John Everett Smith passed away peacefully on the evening of August 29, 2008, from complications of pneumonia, brought on by lung cancer, at the age of 82. He was born in his grandmother's home in York, NE, on February 10, 1926, the first of five children. Read More	John Everett Smith passed away peacefully on the evening of August 29, 2008, from complications of pneumonia, brought on by lung cancer, at the age of 82. He was born in his grandmother's home in York, NE, on February 10, 1926, the first of five children. At the age of six, he and his family moved from Oshkosh, NE to Manson, WA, where his parents owned and operated an apple orchard. One of his first jobs was working as a lookout on Cooper Mountain for the U. S. Forest Service during summer vacations. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on his 18th birthday and as soon as he graduated from Manson High School in 1944, he left for boot camp at RTC Great Lakes, near Chicago. After the War and his enlistment ended, he came back to Washington to attend Washington State College and worked on a degree in Mathematics. In 1948, he joined the Carpenter's Union Local 2205 and entered the carpenter's apprentice program. This started a long career as a carpenter. He belonged to the Union for more than 50 years. During his career, he had worked in heavy construction on all the Columbia River dams in the area, from Grand Coulee to Priest Rapids. He also pounded many a nail in the making of several local buildings of various description: schools, grocery stores, bridges and on and on. He met his wife, Beverly Irene Minnich, while working in Grand Coulee, building a school. They were married on August 22, 1951, in Grandview, WA. They have lived in Wenatchee since then. They had four children, all born in Wenatchee, and he was involved in their activities in various ways, such as set construction for Music Theater and Arlene Dance Studio, the Wenatchee Swim Team and United Cerebral Palsy Parent's group. He was also a life-long blood donor and a 50-year member of the Grange and The Independent Order of Foresters. After retirement, he was heavily involved in Habitat For Humanity, Retired Senior Volunteers (RSVP), The Golden Agers Softball League and The Wenatchee Senior Activity Center, and he loved to put together jigsaw puzzles. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Beverly; his daughters, Kathryn (Scott) Schulke of Pateros, Sharon (Robert) Beebe of Wenatchee and Wanda (Robert) Bolerjack of Everett; two sisters, Vera Goss and Dorothy (Vernon) Collins, both of Manson; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, George Everett; his sister, Florence Escamilla; his brother, Gilbert Lloyd (in infancy); and his parents, Everett L. and Emma M. (Bennett) Smith. At his request, there will be no formal Services. Burial will be at the Chelan Fraternal Cemetery in Chelan, WA. Memorials may be made in his name to the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. A Celebration of his Life will take place Saturday, September 13, 2008, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Sharon Beebe, at 117 N. Garfield in Wenatchee.
