Tiedgen, aged Battle Creek pioneer who died at Norfolk following an operation, were held at the Methodist church in Battle Creek Monday, Rev. Snider of Tilden officiating. A large number of relatives and friends from out of town were present. Burial was made in the Union Cemetery. Mr. Tiedgen lacked less than a month of being 87 years old at the time of his death. He was born in Holstein, Germany, February 12, 1834, and came to America when a boy of 20 and spent several years at St. Louis, Mo. He located on a homestead two miles south of Battle Creek in 1868 and with exception of a few years spent in Missouri, Nebraska had been his home since that time. For several years he had been making his home with his children in Madison county. When John Tiedgen located at Battle Creek over fifty years ago the country was a wilderness but he sensed a great future for the country. He had some capital and farmed extensively from the start. Though supplies had to be hauled from Columbus and all grain and produce marketed at that place, he prospered and it was but a few years until he was an extensive land owner. He encouraged the young homesteaders who settled around him later by giving them work and furnishing supplies when it was impossible for them to get credit elsewhere, so it may be said that no one man contributed so much to the early growth of Madison county. A number of the old timers who are still alive and have amassed a fortune attribute their early success largely to Mr. Tiedgen's wise counsel and financial aid. Eight children and two step-children survive: W. H. Tiedgen of Battle Creek; A. E. Tiedgen of Meadow Grove; R. F. Tiedgen and Mrs. Dora Brechler of Madison; Mrs. Ida Graham of Lander, Wyoming; Mrs. Carrie Hale of Sunnyside, Washington; Mrs. Ella Hackelman of Birdsong, Missouri; Mrs. Nannie Barding of Brazil, Indiana. The step-children are: John H. Harding of Meadow Grove and Mrs. Elizabeth Bussey of Norfolk.
