When a young man, John moved to Jackson County, Missouri, where he met and then married Elizabeth Davis on Nov 28, 1844. The couple traveled west to California in 1852, and first homesteaded in Contra Costa County, before finally settling in Seigler Canyon, Lake County in 1866.
