Description	:	Floyd Powell, race car driver. Powell built race cars in his garage at his home and enjoyed NASCAR racing. He was a very talented race car builder and driver. In his car known as the "Blue Angel" he quickly became track champion at Greenville-Pickins Speedway for three years running 1960, 1961 and 1962. He was also the NASCAR South Carolina state champion for 1961 and 1962. He was also the NASCAR South Carolina state champion for 1961 and 1962. In 1963 with Joe Weatherly's one year old grand national car, Powell raced in his first grand national race (sprint cup series) at the Daytona International Speedway. He ran 15th in his first race a 100 mile qualifier. As a rookie he qualified for the Daytona 500 race on his first try. During the race he was sidelined by mechanical problems and finished 33rd. He followed that up with two strong finishes: 10th and 7th back to back at Weaverville and Hillsborough speedways. His life was tragically cut short by a shotgun blast in a domestic dispute in Cherokee Springs, South Carolina.
